Matthew 5:3
”Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
What does it mean to be poor in spirit?” – To be poor in spirit means to recognise our spiritual bankruptcy before God and the inability of our own works to save us. It is understanding that on our own, we have absolutely nothing of worth to offer God and that no earthly sacrifice of money or material goods will help us inherit His kingdom.
It also means to be spiritually hungry, acknowledging our sins before God and also recognising that because of sin, we are completely destitute spiritually and can do nothing to deliver ourselves from our dire situation. Jesus is saying that, no matter our status in life, we must recognise our need for spiritual dependance on God before we can come to Him in faith to receive the salvation He offers.
May The Lord help us to become poor in Spirit so that we will inherit His Kingdom in Jesus name. Amen
